Village tours begin at the History Center, and Sunday guests wanting a Village tour will also have some time to look at the exhibits inside the History Center before their tour even though the Center will be closed.

SCHS – Extravaganza

The Village of Yesteryear, operated by the Steele County Historical Society, is a setting of fifteen structures where you can experience what life was like in Owatonna and Steele County at the turn of the 20th Century. The village hosts a history Extravaganza in July. 
The Village of Yesteryear features, Dunnell House an 1868 Mansion built by Mark Hill Dunnell, two log cabins, Railroad Station and a Caboose from Steele County dating back to the 1850’s, General Store/Post Office building, Fire Station, Farm Machinery Building, Blacksmith Shop, Country School House and the St. Wenceslaus of Moravia Church built in 1891. The buildings are furnished according to the time they were built, and are connected by a boardwalk. Click here for more information.

History Center: The fully accessible Steele County History Center features rotating exhibits, displays, and educational programming relative to Steele County and Minnesota history. The specialty gift shop features items hand-crafted from the Steele County Region and is open during museum hours.

Our newly constructed History Center features full accessibility, rotation exhibits and displays (call to find out the current exhibit or display) and a multipurpose room for your lunch. The Village of Yesteryear features a 16 structure pioneer village that illustrates Minnesota’s early history. Your guests will be led by a trained guide.
